The supporters of Abdul Majeed Khan, the current member of parliament of Habiganj-2 (Baniachang-Ajmiriganj) and the independent candidate of the eagle symbol in the 12th national election, were campaigning with an alive vulture., Majid Khan’s election campaign was carried out with the vulture at Anand Bazar of Kagapasha Union of Baniachong Upazila on the afternoon of December 25 . Later it was discussed throughout the district.
According to the Rules of Conduct of Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections, alive animals cannot be used as symbols in election campaigns. So the people of the forest department rescued the rare animal after receiving the information. The officials of the forest department said that the currently sick vulture will be released into the wild if it recovers.
Locals said that the rare species of vulture was caught by local people in Makar Haor of Kagapasha Union of Baniachong Upazila last Sunday evening. When the matter became known in the area, a large number of eager people gathered to see the bird. The supporters of Abdul Majid Khan, the current Member of Parliament and independent candidate of Habiganj-2 seat, started their election campaign at the upazila headquarters. This independent candidate of Awami League got the eagle symbol in the election. Many people posted about the issue on social media Facebook. Later, when the district forest department officer was informed, they conducted a raid last Tuesday evening and recovered the vulture.
According to IUCN, there are only 268 vultures in Bangladesh, said Tofail Ahmed Chowdhury, Range Officer of Habiganj Forest Department, this is a rare species of vulture from the Himalayas. The sick vulture was brought to the Directorate of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation through the Baniachong Upazila Livestock Directorate. After 6 to 7 days of treatment it will be released at Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary in Chunarughat.
