The High Court rejected the ruling issued on the question of validity of the appointment of 138 teachers, officers and employees during the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan of Rajshahi University (RU). The High Court bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zeenat Haque passed the verdict on Thursday (December 14).
At the same time, the two-judge High Court bench said that the concerned authorities should take appropriate action against the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of a public university for illegal activities, any irregularities and misappropriation of money while performing their duties.
Advocate Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua appeared for the petitioner and Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Muhammad Russell appeared for the state.
The court said, ‘As 138 persons have not been appointed, this rule has no substance. The university authorities can consider the applications if the applicants apply and are not disqualified for any other reason.’
Previously, The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been asked to investigate him and submit a report within 60 days. Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah High Court Bench gave this order.
May 6, 2021 was the last working day of Professor M Abdus Sobhan as the Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University when he left the campus under police guard and went to his home in Bihas area adjacent to the university. After leaving the campus, it is known that he has given several appointments to the university as teachers, officials and employees by showing the date of the previous day.
When the news of the appointment became known, there was a clash in the campus between the two sides of the BCL who were appointed and those who were not appointed. The anti-corruption side of the progressive teachers’ society became angry. Knowing the matter, the Ministry of Education formed a four-member investigation committee to declare the appointment of Professor Abdus Sobhan on his last working day as illegal that evening.
